How to Lower Your Heating &Cooling Bills

Set your thermostat a few degrees lower. Set it even lower when you are away or asleep.
Set your water heater at 120° or lower.
Take faster showers and/or get a low flow showerhead. Showers can account for 2/3 of your water heating costs.
Your dishwasher uses less water than you do - if you run full loads. Use the 'energy-saver' selection if there is one.
Turn off the lights when you leave the room for more than 5 minutes.
Replace burned out incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents, which use less electricity.
Caulk or weather strip around all exterior door openings.
Close the fireplace damper when it is not in use. Check to see that is closes properly as well.
Put plastic on interior or exterior of windows.
